Because of Them; We Are: Honoring the Legacy of Brown v. Board of Education and the Norfolk 17

Today marks the 70th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education, a decision that changed the course of American history by ending segregation in public schools. This momentous event was a crucial step toward equality and justice, and it is essential to remember and honor the courageous individuals who made it possible.

In Norfolk, Virginia, the Norfolk 17 were the first Black students to integrate all-White schools, facing incredible adversity and hostility. Their bravery and resilience laid the groundwork for future generations, proving that determined individuals can break down barriers and create lasting change. As a proud graduate of Norfolk Public Schools, I stand on the shoulders of these giants. Their legacy is a powerful reminder of the transformative power of education and the importance of community support.

My journey, from being elected to the Norfolk City School Board representing Ward 3 in 2018 and reelected in 2022 to serving as both Chair and Vice Chair of the Board, has been deeply influenced by the values of equality, justice, and community empowerment. These values are at the heart of my campaign for Norfolk City Council in Super Ward 7. I am committed to creating a Norfolk where every resident has access to quality education, economic opportunities, and a safe, thriving community.

As a former National Urban League Young Professionals President and a National Civil Rights leader, I have consistently worked toward social justice and advocacy. My leadership experiences have equipped me with the knowledge and determination needed to address the challenges facing Norfolk today. The legacy of Brown v. Board of Education and the Norfolk 17 inspires me to continue the fight for equality and justice. Because of them, we can keep pushing forward and striving for a better future.

My campaign priorities reflect this ongoing commitment:

  1. Education Equity: Ensuring that all students in Norfolk have access to high-quality education, regardless of their background or socioeconomic status. Investing in our schools is investing in our future.

  2. Economic Empowerment: Creating opportunities for economic growth and development in Norfolk. I am dedicated to supporting small businesses, creating jobs, and fostering a vibrant local economy.

  3. Affordable Housing and Economic Mobility: Making sure that everyone in Norfolk has access to affordable housing and opportunities for economic advancement. I believe in creating policies that support housing affordability and provide pathways for residents to improve their economic situation.

  4. Community Safety: Building a safe and supportive community for all residents. I advocate for comprehensive public safety measures that include community policing, mental health support, and resources for at-risk youth.

  5. Civic Engagement: Encouraging active participation in the democratic process. I aim to empower residents to have a voice in the decisions that affect their lives and to work together to build a better Norfolk.

My campaign for Norfolk City Council is more than a political endeavor; it is a continuation of the fight for civil rights and social justice. As we commemorate the 70th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education and honor the legacy of the Norfolk 17, we are reminded that progress is possible when we come together as a community. Because of them, we are inspired to keep pushing forward, striving for excellence, and building a brighter future for all.

Join me in my mission to create a more just and equitable Norfolk. Together, we can honor the past, address the challenges of the present, and build a better future for generations to come.
